Neurological conditions can affect people at every stage of life, but some problems become particularly important as we grow older. Memory changes, tremor, difficulty walking, numbness in the feet, dizziness and previous stroke can gradually affect independence and quality of life.
For residents of Sector 28 Faridabad and surrounding areas, I provide neurological consultation for these and many other conditions.
I am Dr. (Prof.) Kunal Bahrani, DM Neurology from AIIMS, New Delhi, with more than 15 years of experience in neurology.
Memory Problems: When Is It More Than Normal Forgetfulness?
Everyone forgets things occasionally. The concern arises when memory problems become frequent or begin interfering with everyday activities.
Families may notice that an elderly relative:
- Repeats the same questions
- Forgets recent conversations
- Gets confused about familiar tasks
- Has difficulty managing medicines or finances
- Becomes unusually withdrawn or irritable
- Gets lost in familiar surroundings
These changes should not automatically be labelled as dementia. There can be several causes of memory problems, some of which may be treatable.
A neurological assessment can help identify the pattern and determine whether further evaluation is needed.
Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Problems
Parkinson’s disease is not simply a disease of shaking hands.
Patients may develop:
- Slowness of movement
- Stiffness
- Tremor
- Changes in walking
- Reduced balance
- Smaller handwriting
- Changes in facial expression
- Difficulty with everyday movements
Not every person with tremor has Parkinson’s disease. The diagnosis depends on the overall clinical picture.
Numbness, Burning and Tingling in the Feet
A common complaint among adults is a burning or tingling sensation in the feet or hands.
Peripheral neuropathy can have several causes, including diabetes and other metabolic or systemic conditions. The treatment depends on identifying the underlying problem.
Rather than simply treating pain, the objective should be to determine why the nerves are affected.
Dizziness and Balance Problems
Persistent dizziness can make people afraid of walking, travelling or even leaving the house.
The word “dizziness” can describe several different sensations, including spinning, imbalance, light-headedness or a feeling of unsteadiness.
A detailed history is therefore particularly important. Treatment depends on identifying the underlying cause.
Neurological Care After Stroke
Patients who have suffered a stroke may continue to experience weakness, stiffness, imbalance, speech difficulties or cognitive problems after the acute phase.
Neurological follow-up helps assess recovery and manage ongoing neurological problems. Treatment may need to be adjusted as the patient’s condition changes.
A Long-Term Relationship with the Patient
Many neurological disorders require regular follow-up.
My role is not limited to prescribing a medicine during the first consultation. I believe patients should understand their diagnosis, why treatment has been recommended and what changes they should monitor.
For chronic neurological disorders, follow-up allows treatment to be reviewed based on the patient’s response and changing needs.
